Had the same problem with my ready to run unit which is for a ford bb or 351c which I have in my case. I have had mine since 07, switched to a holley sniper with a hyperspark unit in 19 and put that one in storage. Recently had to send in the sniper for repair work so pulled the old msd unit out and noticed how corroded it was. Mine was so bad that the mechanical advance would not move. Sprayed a bunch of wd-40 in it to free it up. Shortly after that the control board went bad. Took apart the unit which is not hard to do just need a shop press for the gear, replaced the control board assembly and ground out all the corrosion, repacked the bearing and polished up the mag case. Works great now, again they are fairly easy to service yourself.
I know....I thought it was alot. I found other pictures of them just as rusty as mine. Atleast I know and can keep an eye on it. Thanks for watching. See you next year lol.
Happens to all my MSD pro billet dirstributors. My car is kept in a controlled temp garage, never driven in rain, and engine is never washed. I am lucky to get ~3 years out of the MSD distributor before it looks like that. I have replaced mine 4 times in the last 15 years. Known problem with MSD which they never addressed.
I have the same exact problem with a pro billet SBF distributor. It's about 15 years old and I've never had a problem starting my engine. After a winter of sitting I decided to run it. Rough trying to start and a few backfires. I checked everything I could think of and it drove me nuts! Finally I pulled the cap thinking it was cracked and noticed that the button was worn down. The rust looked like yours. I tried to take the magnetic pickup out but the nuts just spun with the stud. Screw it, I bought a new one and will be sending the other back to MSD for refurbishing. I always wanted a backup anyway Thank's for the video and heads up.
You would figure with the amount of tech and let alone the price the rusted-out internals (they) should have rust-preventive materials in place. the same thing happened on my MSD pn# 8386 ready to run (7 year old)distributor.
You got to send the dist to them, after all what good is it now and it's always good to have a backup. Just found you site a couple of weeks ago and love the 55. I'm older and have a ton of time into the ole shoe-box cars. Later
I searched this video because of that and I was wondering how much play is in it. The weights and rotor on mine seem to go up and down to far when I hold the gear still. Is yours like that? Because I feel like I hear a little bit of a rattling. Thanks and beautiful car!!!
I had the same distributor and problem, I replaced the magnetic pick up in it and that helped. Just cleaned up the reluctor. A lot cheaper than a new unit. Did MSD say they would charge you anything for cleaning the old one?
Just found that problem with mine😖 They should’ve recalled them. Will cost me over $900 to replace mine from New Zealand . Might be cheaper for me to just to rebuild it . Then seal it up
Msd sucks for that shit motor i have been rebuilt in 2016 now i Got that problem mean while they other car been rebuilt in 1996 with points and still fires up and runs great 🤔
I just started your video... not fallowing at all.. you talk bushtit from the every beginning , ( you should know how many horse power the engine has got, not just guessing... and what is that annoying noise on the back ground...!!!!!

How much do they charge to get it cleaned and coated ?
I searched this video because of that and I was wondering how much play is in it. The weights and rotor on mine seem to go up and down to far when I hold the gear still. Is yours like that? Because I feel like I hear a little bit of a rattling. Thanks and beautiful car!!!
I just walked out to the garage and checked my old one......I don't have much play at all. Thanks ....for the compliment on the car.
I had the same distributor and problem, I replaced the magnetic pick up in it and that helped. Just cleaned up the reluctor. A lot cheaper than a new unit.
Did MSD say they would charge you anything for cleaning the old one?
I never sent if off. I put a new one in and still have the rusty one. I just check the new one more often now.
@@CHASINGMUSCLECARS
Some guys drill a 1/8 inch hole in each side of the cap for added ventilation.
@@CHASINGMUSCLECARS
Your car looks familiar, are you in the Chicagoland area?
No Im in Pa .....close to the MD line.
MSD did put the hole in the side by it doesn't seem to be work very well haha.

Hey there How can I send mine to msd to get it fixed ?
(888) 258-3835
Thanks for heads up Joe, I have a MSD distributor too. Gonna write your P/N 855551 here so I can check my number when I head out to garage.
Awesome. I'm glad I can help someone before they are stuck. Happy New Year brother.
Do you live close to the ocean by chance
Few hours away but the car does go to both shows each year. I have heard from others that it happens often even when not never the ocean.
